Can I transfer an existing ISA to a halal ISA?

Steps and considerations for transferring an ISA to a halal provider or product.

The short answer

Yes. You can usually transfer an ISA to another provider or to a different ISA product. Use the official transfer process offered by providers so the money keeps its ISA tax status. If you hold investments, check whether the receiving halal ISA accepts in-specie transfers or requires selling and repurchasing.

How to transfer

Ask the receiving halal provider to start the transfer. Do not withdraw and re-deposit yourself because that could lose ISA tax benefits. Check whether assets can be transferred in-specie (as-is) or must be sold first.

Shariah-compliance considerations

If moving from a conventional Cash ISA, check the cash handling and expected-profit mechanics of the new provider. If moving investments, confirm the receiving product’s Shariah screening and governance.

What this means in practice

  1. 1Contact the halal provider and ask for their ISA transfer form or process.
  2. 2Confirm whether your current assets can transfer in-specie or whether a sale will be needed.
  3. 3Keep records of the transfer request and confirmations from both providers.
