ISA basics
Can I use a Lifetime ISA for halal investing?
How a Lifetime ISA interacts with halal investing, what to check and practical points.
The short answer
Yes — a Lifetime ISA is an ISA wrapper. Whether your LISA is halal depends on the underlying savings or investments inside it. A Cash LISA that pays conventional interest is not suitable for someone avoiding riba. Stocks, funds or Islamic savings inside a LISA must each be assessed for Shariah compliance.
Wrapper versus underlying contract
An ISA or LISA is a tax wrapper. The wrapper does not change whether the underlying product pays interest or holds non-compliant assets. Always inspect the product contract and how returns are generated.
Shariah-compliance considerations
Our platform uses AAOIFI Shari'ah Standard No. 21 as a practical default benchmark for shares. Common application used here: acceptable core business; non-permissible income below 5% of total income; interest-bearing debt no more than 30% of market value; and interest-bearing cash/securities no more than 30% of market value. Provider data dates and calculation conventions can differ. For personal religious questions consult a qualified scholar.
What this means in practice
- 1Check whether the LISA is Cash or Stocks and Shares and read the provider’s terms.
- 2If it’s Cash, check whether the return is conventional interest or an expected-profit structure.
- 3If it’s investment-based, check the fund or shares’ screening and Shariah governance.
