Managing your ISA
Does selling an investment restore my ISA allowance?
Why selling inside an ISA, withdrawing and re-subscribing are different, and why cash treatment still matters after a sale.
The short answer
Selling an investment usually turns it into cash inside the ISA. It does not usually reset the annual subscription amount you already used. Check current rules and your provider's terms before you plan to withdraw and replace money.
Keep the sequence clear
There are three steps: selling an investment, holding cash inside the ISA and withdrawing that cash outside the wrapper. Each step can have different timing and allowance effects.
A provider may offer a flexible ISA feature. Confirm that in the terms rather than assuming it applies.
Shariah-compliance considerations
A sale does not remove the need to check how the proceeds are held. Look at the provider's cash-interest policy for uninvested money inside the ISA and the structure of any account used after withdrawal.
If a sale follows a Shariah downgrade, check the methodology for timing and purification rules. Do not assume a universal grace period.
What this means in practice
- 1Record the sale date, proceeds, destination and any later withdrawal.
- 2Check the provider's flexible-ISA terms before assuming money can be replaced.
- 3Review cash treatment after the sale and before moving proceeds.
