The short answer

A platform is an intermediary that holds and administers investments for you. A fund pools many investors’ money and invests according to a mandate. You can hold funds on a platform; the platform is not the same as the fund manager.

Platform role

Platforms provide accounts, custody, administration and sometimes tools. They may offer Shariah-screened fund lists but are distinct from the fund managers.

Fund role

A fund collects investor capital and invests according to its prospectus. Funds have managers, fees and a legal structure that determines how returns are generated.

What this means in practice

  1. 1Choose a regulated platform with the market access you need.
  2. 2Read fund factsheets to understand objective, holdings and fees.
  3. 3Compare platform fees and fund fees to estimate total costs.
