ISA basics
Who can open a Stocks and Shares ISA?
The main UK checks you need, why tax residence matters, and extra product checks a halal investor should do.
The short answer
Eligibility depends on current UK rules and provider requirements. Check your age, UK tax-residence and the provider's criteria on GOV.UK before applying.
Start with the official eligibility rules
ISA eligibility follows UK rules for the account type. Tax residence is important and is not the same as citizenship or a postal address. Providers may have ID checks and minimums.
Check GOV.UK first, then read the provider's application criteria before you give personal information or move money. Lifetime ISAs and Junior ISAs have different rules from adult Stocks and Shares ISAs.
Shariah-compliance considerations
Being eligible to open an ISA is not the same as the account being Shariah-compliant. After you confirm eligibility, check the investments, screening method, cash policy and the provider's governance.
Do not open a product only because it is labelled an ISA or is marketed to Muslim customers. Check how the cash and investments actually work.
What this means in practice
- 1Check the current GOV.UK ISA eligibility page.
- 2Read the provider's age, tax-residency, identity and minimum-deposit terms.
- 3Check the product's investment universe and Shariah methodology separately from eligibility.
