ISA basics

Can I have more than one ISA?

How holding several ISAs works, how the allowance applies and why each account still needs its own check.

The short answer

You can hold more than one ISA. The key is how the annual subscription rules apply across your accounts. Check GOV.UK and your providers before opening or paying into another ISA.

Holding accounts is not the same as making subscriptions

You can keep ISAs from earlier years while opening another account. The risk is misunderstanding the rules for contributions, transfers and the total allowance.

Make a simple list of each ISA: provider, type, whether you have contributed this tax year, and any planned transfer. This helps avoid mistakes.

Shariah-compliance considerations

Each account can hold different products. One ISA may have conventional interest-bearing cash while another has screened investments. The label 'ISA' does not make them the same.

Review each account separately for cash policy, holdings, fees and Shariah oversight. A transfer preserves tax status only when done using the formal transfer process; it does not automatically confirm the destination product's structure.

What this means in practice

  1. 1List every ISA you hold and note its type and provider.
  2. 2Check subscription rules before making a new payment.
  3. 3Use the receiving provider's official transfer process rather than withdrawing and re-depositing blindly.
  4. 4Review the Shariah features of each account on their own merits.
