Can I keep cash while I decide how to invest it?

Options and considerations for holding cash temporarily when seeking halal investments.

The short answer

Yes. Holding cash for a short period is common. However, a conventional cash balance or Cash ISA that pays interest is not suitable for a person avoiding riba. Choose a suitable Islamic savings product or a non-interest bearing option while you decide.

Short-term cash options

You can hold cash in an Islamic savings account, a zero-interest account, or an easily accessible halal product. Check the product contract for expected-profit terms and how the provider manages cash.

Shariah-compliance considerations

A conventional interest-paying Cash ISA or cash balance is not suitable for a reader avoiding riba. An Islamic savings arrangement must be assessed from its actual product contract, expected-profit terms, cash handling and Shariah governance.

What this means in practice

  1. 1Decide how long you will hold cash and the level of access you need.
  2. 2Compare Islamic savings products and read their contract for expected-profit terms.
  3. 3Keep records of where the cash is held and the product’s Shariah statements.
