Shariah screening
Is cash held inside a Stocks and Shares ISA automatically halal?
How cash within an investment ISA should be treated for Shariah purposes.

The short answer
No. Cash held inside a Stocks and Shares ISA is not automatically halal simply because it sits in an ISA. The permissibility depends on how that cash is held, whether it receives conventional interest and the product contract.
Why the wrapper does not change the cash
An ISA is a tax wrapper. If the cash balance accrues interest it remains conventional interest unless the provider has structured the product as an expected-profit Islamic arrangement.
Shariah-compliance considerations
As consistently noted, a conventional interest-paying Cash ISA or cash balance is not suitable for a reader avoiding riba. Assess the account contract, profit mechanism and the provider’s Shariah governance.
What this means in practice
- 1Check how the platform holds idle cash and whether it earns interest.
- 2If you need to avoid interest, ask the platform for an Islamic cash option or withdraw to a suitable product.
- 3Document any communications about how cash is handled.
